Nicky’s Nocturnal Octopus
Written By: Ginny Christensen
Illustrated by: Sandy DiLeo
Review by Tina Field Howe , Author
Christensen’s engaging words in “Nicky’s Nocturnal Octopus” could have been spoken by young Nicky himself. Children will like reading the clever turns of rhyme, which include just enough “tough” words to also make this a good learning experience. This fanciful story holds a surprise that will be fun for adults to read along with their children and will perhaps remind them of their own secret “friends” from their youth.
DiLeo’s watercolors are both naturalistic and whimsical – a nice combination and perfect companion to this story. There’s good reason to look at the images again and again, as there’s a lot going on in them that may not be apparent the first time through.
I can imagine many further adventures for Nicky and his octopus!
This is a wonderful book. The rhymes are very creative and the watercolor pictures are just beautiful. Young children will love looking at all the fanciful fish and other items in the story. The scary page is just great - love the teeth! You don't expect the ending. Its a good lesson that if you take care of things and do things right, something good will come of it. Its a good "imaginative" story as well.
The octopus facts are great. I learned quite a bit of things that I never knew. This book should be in learning facilities.
Ginny, I think you did a good job writing your first children's book. I love it! Keep up the good lo work. Look forward to eading your next children's book and also your novel. I am very proud of you.

What a charming and endearing tale of a little boy and his special friend ...
This is the kind of book that your little one will want to read again and again. The story is so engaging and the illustrations are simply beautiful...
I especially liked the learning aspect of the book and even learned a few things myself from the educational facts in the back of the book...

The illustrations are just glorious, capturing the attention and drawing you in.
The story itself invokes the creativity and imagination we all felt as children, making you recall the humorous and crazy thought process we all had once upon a time.
I absolutely love that this story is told in a poetic rhyme format. Nicky’s Nocturnal Octopus is a charming and wonderful read for kids of all ages.
Ginny, as a fellow author I found myself wanting to find out what happened in Paris. I wish you all the success in the world. I know all the battles from the first line to the final edit and hope your path is smooth. I know it will be a great book for you. We need more local authors to step forward in Fresno.
